Journal Editor's Fall 2013 Update

Date: October 17, 2013

Dr. Jeryl Jones, Editor-in-Chief, Veterinary Radiology & Ultrasound
Ms. Lucinda Ayres, Managing Editor, Veterinary Radiology & Ultrasound
Ms. Meredith Duey, Managing Editor, Wiley-Blackwell Publishing

Manuscript Submissions: The Journal’s annual page budget is 720 pages or approximately 110 articles distributed over 6 issues. During the period of 7/31/12 to 8/1/13, we received and processed 237 manuscript submissions or approximately 2.3 times as many submissions as available pages in the annual budget.  The majority of submissions were Original Investigations. For the Imaging Diagnosis feature, we have 12 available slots per year (2 per issue). During this review period, there were 56 or 4.67 times as many Imaging Diagnosis submissions as available slots.  Submissions for the new Invited Review feature are growing. We have been impressed with the quality of these Invited Review papers and anticipate they will be very helpful for readers.  We have also begun receiving more Letters to the Editor.  These are valuable resources for readers in that they provide post-reviews of published findings and an open forum for discussions. We continue to publish all abstracts for ACVR, IVRA, ECVDI, and EAVDI scientific meetings each year.  These abstracts are a valuable resource for readers in that they provide cutting edge information on new research findings in a short communication format.  Abstracts also provide authors with a mechanism for publishing small studies or preliminary findings.

Manuscript Processing: The average number of days from submission to 1st decision was similar to last year at 32 days.   The average number of days from submission to final decision was 68 days.

Impact Factor: The journal’s Impact Factor increased from 1.082 to 1.414.  The ranking in the Veterinary Sciences category increased from 50/143 to 39/142.   These numbers put our Journal ahead of the American Journal of Veterinary Research (IF 1.348, 44/142) and Veterinary Surgery (1.242, 51/142).  We commend the authors, reviewers, editors and publishers for all their hard work to make this happen.

Associate Editors: Nominees for Associate Editor openings on the VRU Editorial Board are selected based on a consensus between the represented organization’s President and the VRU Editor. Nominated members are then approved by a vote of the ACVR Executive Council. Duties of the Associate Editors are to provide advice to the Editor and serve as judges in the ACVR Resident Paper Award competition.  Each Associate Editor serves a 6-year term.   These respected scholars are critical for helping us maintain our Journal’s reputation and our readers’ trust.
