CONTACT PERSON: Dr. Robert T. O’Brien, Search Chair bobrien@illinois.edu Department of Veterinary Clinical Medicine University of Illinois 1008 West Hazelwood Drive Urbana IL 61802-4714

DATE POSTED: March 18, 2009

POSITION: Full time 100% (12 month basis) Clinical or Tenure Track Assistant, Associate or Full Professor in Veterinary Radiology in the Imaging section at the University of Illinois.

DESCRIPTION: A world-class institution of higher learning, the University of Illinois, with over two dozen Nobel Laureates or Pulitzer Prize recipients among its alumni, is seeking an experienced, innovative leader in Imaging.  Collaborative research opportunities abound at the University of Illinois, particularly in orthopedic biology and oncology within the veterinary teaching hospital and also with biomedical imaging groups on campus. Didactic and clinical instruction to professional students as well as departmental residents and interns is enhanced by a newly installed digital imaging system (Eklin DR) and archive systems (Kodak Carestream PACS). The PACS archive system allows image viewing from all campus computers as well as diagnostic workstations. Users with secure access privileges may also access the images from off campus. UIUC VTH radiologists routinely use a medical transcription and voice recognition software (Dragon Naturally Speaking 9.0) for dictating imaging reports. Together with the new PACS system, a filmless and paperless environment is being developed.

The Imaging/Radiation Therapy section in the Department of Veterinary Clinical Medicine provides medical imaging services for small, large and exotic animals in the Veterinary Teaching Hospital.  The section consists of three ACVR board-certified faculty positions, one imaging intern/M.S. candidate, six technologists, two secretaries and a radiology staff supervisor. State of the art equipment is available on site and includes digital radiography (Eklin DR), ultrasound (MyLab 70 with contrast ultrasound capability), 16 slice helical computed tomography (GE Lite Speed), fluoroscopy, digital nuclear scintigraphy system (Mirage), and magnetic resonance imaging (Esaote VetMR Grande).  The MRI scanner is used for imaging both small animal and equine patients. The facility also offers on-site Cobalt 60 (Theratron 780) radiation therapy for palliative and curative treatment under the supervision of a radiation oncologist. Additional local off-site facilities include three MRI scanners (two 3.0T and one 14.1T) at the Beckman Institute's Biomedical Imaging Center.

The clinical and teaching duties would be shared with two other radiologists.  The faculty share duties in a pre-clinical didactic course.  Opportunities to participate in continuing education for graduate veterinarians via the internet are available through the Veterinary Education Online AVEO@ program. Development of an active research program in the candidate's area(s) of interest is strongly encouraged and supported.
